Above is an electrical circuit map. It displays amperage of various fuses, equipment supported and location.

Metes and Bounds

http://www.surveyhistory.org/metes_&_bounds_vs__public_lands.htm
One of the first systems used in Colonial America to deliniate property was Metes and Bounds. Metes and Bounds marks property by having a known landmark for a starting point, and then follow a line according to a magnetic bearing, or the course of a stream, or of a road or highway.

Cadastral maps represent the boundaries of individual land parcels in a given area, and usually contain details such as land ownership, tenure and obligations.

PLSS

http://www.historicmapworks.com/Map/US/22293/
Above is a PLSS (Public Land Survey System) map of Commerce Township, Michigan, where my Father-in-Law currently resides. The PLSS is a system brought about by the Land Ordinance of 1785, and the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, that divides public lands in the U.S. into 6 square mile tracts called townships.

Celestial Map

http://www.antiquemapsandprints.com/p-16469.jpg

Celestial maps provide users with the position of the stars and were , at one point, useful in navigating open waters.

Bathymetric

http://www.nauticalcharts.com/cape-canaveral-to-key-west-chart.htm
Bathymetric maps are similar to topographic maps but instead of displaying elevation above sea level they show depth below sea level. Maps like the one above are useful for navigating costal waters.

Multivariate Choropleth

http://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/3087/what-makes-a-map-be-classed-as-badly-designed
A Multivariate Choropleth map provides multiple variables. The above map provides three variables; The ability to read, The ability to write, and average income.

Univariate Choropleth

http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/c/l/clw300/586_Project_8.html
Unlike a bivariate choropleth map, a univariate choropleth map uses only one variable. The map above provides LISA data (Local Indicator of Spatial Association) for the percentage of Europeans living in Aukland.

Standardized Choropleth

http://courses.washington.edu/info424/Labs/ChoroplethMap.html

Standardized Choropleth maps provide aerially averaged data pertaining to a sprcified standard unit. In many cases that unit is related to population but in the case of the above map, the unit is percentage of job change.

Unstandardized choropleth

http://eps.mq.edu.au/courses/GEOS219/choropleth.htm
Unstandardized choropleth maps are thematic maps that display data sets as raw numbers. Abobe is an unstandardized choropleth map displaying the number of deaths for persons under one year of age in Australia.

Isoline

http://www.csulb.edu/~rodrigue/geog140/labs/contourmaplab.html
Isolines are lines that connect areas of equal value. Above is a contour map of a portion of the Grand Canyon with isolines depicting elevation.

Isotherm

http://www.middleschoolscience.com/isotherms.htm
Above is a map displaying Isotherms. Those are connecting lines of equal temperature.

Flow Map

http://www.grida.no/graphicslib/detail/main-flow-of-illegally-logged-timber-to-europe_8270
A flow map shows the movement of an object from one place to another. Above is a flow map showing the movement of illegally logged timber into Europe.

Cartogram

http://litchfieldswenson.weebly.com/cartograms.html

A cartogram is a map that substitutes a variable for land size relative to that variable. Above is a cartogram displaying Per Capita GDP in 2000.

Statistical Map

http://www.worldmapper.org/display.php?selected=243
Above is a graphical representation of statistcal data gathered in 2001 pertaining to vehicle caused deaths around the world. That year there were approximately 984,000 road traffic deaths with over half of them occuring in eastern and southern Asia.

Infrared aerial photography

http://www.stxmaps.com/go/fish-camp.html
Infrared aerial photography utilizes film sensative to infrared light. Above is an image of a fish camp.

Black and White Aerial Photography

http://apollomissionphotos.com/index_merc_pad13.html
Aerial photographs are a "birds eye" view of a portion of the earth's surface that provide detailed measurments, land-use and environmental conditions.

Doppler

http://www.intellicast.com/national/radar/current.aspx?location=USFL0316

A Doppler radar is a specialized radar that makes use of the Doppler effect to produce velocity data about objects at a distance. The above image is a Doppler radar map of South Florida.

LIDAR

LIDAR is Light detection and ranging. The above LIDAR map is a 3D image used for urban modeling.

Bilateral Graph

http://www.international.gc.ca/economist-economiste/performance/state-point/state_2012_point/2012_5.aspx?lang=eng
A bilateral provides information about two entities simultaniously. The bilateral graph above shows the rate of increase in US-China trade ande the rate of decline in US-Canada trade over a 10 year period.

Laffer Curve

http://www.heritage.org/research/reports/2004/06/the-laffer-curve-past-present-and-future
Above is a Laffer Curve. It was named after Arther Laffer, a member of Ronald Reagan's economic advisory board. It is designed to show optimal tax rates. It shows that a tax rate of 100% brings in the same revenue as a 0% tax rate. If a population is taxed at 100% that are not incentivized to work thus no tax revenue will be collected.

Lorenz Curve

http://www.shmoop.com/economic-principles/growth-productivity-equity.html

Above is a  Lorenz Curve. It identifies the share of the nation’s income earned by different segments of the population.

Index Value Plot

http://www.themacrotrader.com/category/asset-allocation/
The Index Value Plot above tracks the upper and lower trends of an ivestment profile. It gives users information relative to the high and low ends of the idecies being tracked.

ScatterPlot

http://cwx.prenhall.com/bookbind/pubbooks/esm_sincich_pracstats_2/chapter2/custom2/deluxe-content.html
A Scatter Plot is used to investigate the possible relationship between two variables that both relate to the same event. The scatter plot above corrilates excersise on equipment per length of equipment ownership.

Population Profile

http://www.theitc.org.uk/blog/
The above population profile is a chart showing the number of people as a function of their ages in the United Kingdom.

Windrose

http://www.artmeetsearth.org/landmaps.html
Above is a wind rose. A wind rose is a graphic tool used by meteorologists to give a succinct view of how wind speed and direction are typically distributed at a particular location.

Triangle Plot with contouring

http://www.gigawiz.com/ternary.html
Creating a triangular plot, also known as a ternary diagram, involves transforming three variables to ratios of three dependent proportions that are plotted in a 2-D simplex. Above is a 2-D projection of a ternary diagram that displays values of a 4th dimension using a color scale, contouring by triangulation.

Parallel Coordinate Graph

http://stn.spotfire.com/stn/Configure/VisualizationTypes.aspx
The Parallel Coordinate Graph resembles the line chart, but maps each row in the data table as a line. The graph above lists the percentage of natural sweetners in various foods.

Box Plot

http://www.itl.nist.gov/div898/handbook/eda/section3/boxplot.htm
a box plot is a convenient way of graphically depicting groups of numerical data through their quartiles. This box plot reveals that a machine has a significant effect on energy with respect to location and possibly variation.

Stem-and-leaf

http://math.andyou.com/418
A stem-and-leaf display is a device for presenting quantitative data in a graphical format. Above is a stem-and-leaf depicting basketball player heights.
